PRESERVING THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE

  • The usual monthly conjoint meeting of the M. I. association was held last evening.   A very interesting programme was rendered to a well-filled house.
  • The good sleighing on New Year’s day was highly appreciated by lovers of that pastime.  The heavy snowfall in the evening interfered very materially with other amusements.  The party in the Music hall was attended by about thirty couples, who had an unusually good time, and felt well repaid for their tramp through the snow.
  • The concert, given for the benefit of the academy, given in the Music hall last Tuesday evening, proved a great success, and was one of the greatest musical treats we ever had. The programme was well rendered, and the pieces received with good applause.  Some of the pieces, however, are deserving of special mention.  “The Medley Quartette” rendered by Messrs W. W. Sheffield, J. H. Lingford jr., James A. Cottrell, and Charles Cottrell, jr., received the first encore.  The negro stump speech, by W. A. Hyde, was the most amusing feature of I the evening and necessitated his putting in a second appearance.  The cornet solo by Mr. Wilkinson also received an encore, in response to which he rendered “Annie Laurie” in a very masterly manner.  The whole was a well-gotten-up entertainment, and a credit to the managers.
  • Now that we have got thoroughly started into a new year, we are able to look with a degree of pride at the progress made in 1890.  It is a foregone conclusion that there is more enterprise in our town than in any place between Salt Lake City and Ogden, but last year we beat all previous records.  Among the leading improvements are the following: The Kaysville academy at a cost of $7,000; the city hall, $4,000; coop store addition, $3,000, billiard hall $1,200.  Besides these are the following residences: E. W. Layton, $1,600; Lewis Whiteside, $1,500, W. I. Layton, $1,200; Alexander Dawson jr., $1,000; Schofield Kershaw, $1,300; Rev E. M. Knox $1,000; James and Daniel Walker, each, $600; James A. Cottrell $600; Fred Burton, $300; Robert Burton, $500; besides a large number of smaller places of minor importance. Besides we have three good business places started all on the broad road to fortune, to say nothing of a new saloon of which we do not feel disposed to boast.
  • The rumpus of yesterday at the Temperance hall was a disgrace to our once quiet town.  When pistols are flourished and men roll around drunk on the outside of a temperance hall it indicates a serious infraction of our city ordinances, and the proper authorities would do well to investigate the matter.
